A Traveler's Promise

So it's been awhile since I last visited this little blog o' mine. I'm not even going to try to make an excuse since, quite frankly, I don't have a good one besides I've just been really really busy.

BUT, I will make you a promise that I'm going to try my very best to keep.  I'm headed back up to the great state of O-H-I-O with my grandma from Houston (heirin after referred to as "Gram") to stay with my parents for the next 6ish weeks.  It's a long drive, so I'll try to give periodic updates along the way about the sights and sounds of us weary travelers.  Stay tuned...

Stumbling Blocks?

I just found a new way to waste time online...

It's called StumbleUpon, and it lets you fill out a list of your interests.  Then, it searches the web for new web pages you might be interested in, based on your list!  Talk about a fantastic way to procrastinate!  I'll definitely spend a lot of time on there this summer.

Here's a couple of my favorite pages thus far:

Read Upon gives you full versions of thousands of books for FREE online!

And I found this fantastic picture of what I assume is the Grand Canyon on something called EarthShots .  Incredible, right?

Finally, I can't wait to make this Cinnamon Sugar Pull-Apart Bread from Joy the Baker.  Doesn't it look delish?  I'll update you once I make it.

I hope you enjoy StumbleUpon as much as I have!!  Have a happy Friday. :-)

Just Call Me Martha...

...Martha Stewart!!!

I've been on kind of a decorating kick lately.  Our living room had this huge space on the wall above the couch that was just BLAH:

So, I framed a bunch of pictures and made a flower arrangement for that wall.  I also recovered these two old armchairs we had with fabric to match the throw pillows.  Finally, we found a cool glass-topped coffee table for a very nice price (a.k.a. FREE) that we spray-painted dark brown to match the rest of the room.  I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out:

I got that cute lantern on the table for $4 at IKEA.
My mom made that footstool for us when we were getting ready to move down here, and it's come in super handy!  I'm really proud of the way this all turned out.

Not My First Rodeo

On Saturday night, we got tickets for the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo.  It comes once a year to Austin for about two weeks, and includes a full fair, carnival, livestock, rodeo, and a concert from some pretty popular bands every night.

 Get your horns up!
This little guy was one of the cutest things I have ever seen!  So soft and fluffy, and those eyes will melt your heart.

This little one was also a precious little fluffball.
Unfortunately, I must have gotten too close to this mama and her baby, because she started pawing the ground and snorting like she was about to charge at me while I was taking pictures at the gate.
I don't know if you've ever seen mutton-bustin', but it's hilarious!  These little 5 or 6-year-old munchkins try to ride around on sheep.  They all have big hockey helmets on to stay safe.  So cute!
The mutton-bustin' kiddos with all of the fair queens.

 Barrel racing!
And the moment everyone has been waiting for...angry bulls getting ready to charge out of the chute!  When they're setting up, you can hear the bulls banging their horns inside the chute...kind of creepy!

The beautiful horses run through the arena at the end.  Incredible sight.
After the rodeo, they set up a rotating stage in the middle of the arena and we got to see The Band Perry!  They are incredible.

 Goodnight, Austin!

Sickie

I'm home sick today, and always forget what you get to experience on day-time TV.

Mike Tyson is on Ellen.  He has a tattoo of a spider eating his eye gracing the left side of his head.  Um...why?

Also, the following is an actual Google Chat conversation Dutch  Boy and I had several hours ago, provided here for your entertainment.

A Brief Wintry Wonderland

Yes, it's true.  Tonight, I'm sitting on the couch with the patio door open, enjoying a day that was 75 degrees.  Last week, though was a different story.  On Wednesday, we had an ice storm, when I saw no less than 6 accidents on my way to work.  I woke up Wednesday morning at 5:30 like I always do, and checked the outside temperature because it had been raining all night.  At that point, it was still 48 degrees.  By the time I left for school at 6:30, it was 32, and by the time my car slid into the school parking lot, it was down to 19 (and still raining).  Crazy weather.

The weekend before that, we actually had an ice storm which turned into a real, live, school-canceling, work-canceling, SNOW DAY!!!!  IN CENTRAL TEXAS!!!!!!!!!  I was ecstatic about this, because I do occasionally miss those northern blizzards.  This was the first time that Miss Lady was able to play in the snow, and she didn't really know what to make of it.  She walked outside the apartment the first thing that morning, went down the first two steps, and then just stopped and stared at the white stuff on the ground, and looked back at us, as if to say "Well, now what're you going to do about this?  This is not a part of my morning routine."

Here's a few pictures from that morning...not real exciting, but at least they do prove that the snow actually existed:

And now, ten days later, I'm going to go find my bathing suit so that I can go for a swim tomorrow after work!  Ok...not really, because being inside all winter has not helped my pasty-whiteness, but maybe once a I gain a little color back I'll hit the pool.  We'll see...

Life is a Highway, or RASCAL FLATTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday night I went to a Rascal Flatts concert with my friend Kelly. I've always wanted to see them, and when we found out they were coming a couple of months ago, we snatched up tickets. Chris Young and Luke Bryan opened for them, and then they came out with a bang:

Sorry the video is so bad...I may or may not have danced my way through the entire concert. Also, sorry if you hear a random shriek halfway through the video...I may or may not have screamed incessantly through a good portion of the concert. I can neither confirm nor deny these rumors...

I decided not to take my DSLR camera, because it's just so big. Instead, I brought a small digital camera and my Flip video camera. Unfortunately, when I pulled the digital camera out of my purse at the concert, I discovered that the batteries were dad. Needless to say, the Flip camera was going to have to suffice for both video and still shots.

When we left the concert, it had started to sleet, but that's a story for a different day....

snOMG

The heat is cranked up. The dog and I share several blankets on the couch. All of the plants are inside, safe and sound, viewing the patio from my bookcase. I have a roaring fire in the fireplace. I'm about to start a pot of chili and make a vat of hot apple cider. All of this, in preparation for what has been termed the "Storm of the Century" or "Snomaggedon".

Keep in mind, though, that I live in central Texas, and, while it is frigidly windy and cold, the chances of it snowing at all -- let alone a blizzard -- are almost null. We won't get the several feet of snow that much of the country is expected to get, but that doesn't lesson the fact that it's wicked cold out there! I woke up in the middle of the night last night, startled by the sound of what were supposedly 50-mile-an-hour wind gusts.

Most ironic of all, though, is that yesterday our temps were actually in the 70s. On Sunday, Dutch Boy and I took Miss Lady for a serious hike at the creek, and she even went swimming. Some pictures from the weekend, pre-Ice Age:

And, since it's February, I guess I need to declare my February resolution to the masses: This month, I will spend 10 or 15 minutes straightening up every night, in order to lessen the need for cleaning on the weekends (because nothing ruins a weekend like decluttering).

Top Ten

Be warned...this post has nothing to do with anything except for the random thoughts that dance around in my head.

1. I'm watching American Idol right now. There is a man from Milwaukee who just auditioned in his Civil War re-enactor's uniform (complete with rifle), singing that old Lion King song, "In the Jungle". Need I say more?
2. I'm addicted to Lay's Kettle Chips. Seriously. I just finished off one bag, and ate 1/3 of another.
3. I just unzipped my jacket and out fell a kettle chip.
4. I bought a new planner at Target and I'm kind of obsessed with it...like I'm trying to come up with things to do just so that I can write them down in the appropriate date. I'm a little OCD like that.
5. I know that it's a little late in the "new year" to make a list of resolutions, but I decided that instead of doing resolutions for the whole year, I would pick one goal to focus on a month, and hopefully they would build on each other.
6. January's goal? Get a planner. Mission accomplished.
7. To keep myself accountable, I think I'll post the goal on here at the beginning of each month. Not that you have to care, it will just make me focus.
8. I'm contemplating breaking into the bag of kettle chips again.
9. Someone help me...I have a problem.
10. G'night!!

Christmas, Part 2

Once again, I'm a slacker and have yet to finish a blog post I started about 10 days ago. Well, Christmas and New Year's have both come and gone, and I just finished my third week back to work with the kiddos.

The second part of our break was spent with my family. Dutch Boy and I flew back to Houston, where we met my parents and grandparents (both sides!), plus my aunt, uncle, and cousins. We all drove over to San Antonio to meet my baby brother and to see his graduation from Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base.

Here come the pictures!
